The Large-Scale Biosphere - Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) is an international research initiative conducted from 1995-2005 and led by Brazil.

The LBA Project encompasses several scientific disciplines, or components. The LBA-ECO component focuses on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amazonia?"

The Amazon jungle is the largest remaining expanse of tropical rain forest on Earth. Although the jungle's area is so big that it reaches out to several different countries, most of its area is located within the Brazilian territory.

Amazonia is recognized as the planet's greatest reserve of life forms. Here the largest continuous expanse of tropical forest on Earth harbors approximately one-third of her species. Despite three centuries of scientific study, only a small fraction of its biological richness has been revealed.
