Why study biomes?
NAButton.GIF (12292 bytes)Because of the differences in temperature, soils, elevation, rainfall, etc., sections of our planet grow different types of plants and animals. These sections are called biomes. Biome classifications vary, but frequently they include tundra, boreal forests, deciduous forests, tropical rain forests, grasslands or savannas, and arid or desert areas.

Each biome is different in its productivity, biogeochemistry, response to stimuli, and many other factors. To understand our planet as a whole, we must study each biome in detail. See the related information sidebar for links to articles related to biome study.
