Overview
The ORNL DAAC offers a THREDDS (Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services) Data Server catalog for discovery and use of a limited number of data sets. Our THREDDS Data Server (TDS) allows users to find data sets that are pertinent to their specific research needs, access the data, and use them without necessarily downloading the entire file to their local system. TDS
The ORNL DAAC's THREDDS Data Server (TDS) serves the contents of the datasets, in addition to providing catalogs and metadata for them. The TDS is able to read data sets in various formats, and serves them through OPeNDAP, OGC Web Coverage Service, NetCDF subset, and bulk HTTP file transfer services. The first three allow the user to obtain subsets of the data, which is crucial for large datasets. The TDS has the ability to aggregate many files into virtual datasets, which frees users from the many details of file storage and naming, and greatly simplifies user access to large collections of files. |
ORNL DAAC's THREDDS Data Server
For a limited number of data products, the ORNL DAAC offers a TDS Catalog Service. Background
TDS was developed by Unidata and uses the Common Data Model to merge OPeNDAP, netCDF, and HDF5 data models.
A number of TDS servers are available. Software tools for accessing data via TDS have been developed:
